Carbrooke Heritage News; December 2012

Christmas and the New Year is fast approaching!

2012 has been a fantastic year for community spirit, not only in Carbrooke, as we celebrated the Queens Jubilee, everybody pulled out the stops at the last minute to bring the Village fete together, The Blenheim Grange Summer Fayre and Heritage weekend.  Also, as we were joined by members of the Parachute Regiment in our ‘Act of Remembrance’ on 11th November, and as we enjoyed the Olympics and Paralympics celebrationswith rest of the country.

What a great year to build on, for the future.

At our meeting on 7th November, it was decided to arrange workshops and talks; a chance to show the sort of subjects, offer help and advice to get started, on local, family, social or architectural history, available to research, under the umbrella of ‘Carbrooke Heritage’

We plan to invite guest speakers  to talk on topics of interest to the local community. So look out for them next year.

We are also thinking of logging the building in Carbrooke – no matter how old - or young! and invite all Carbrooke residents to take a photograph of their house (and themselves) for a ‘Snaphot in time’ project.

So get snapping!

And so, back to Christmas! – In 1928, the Vicar of Carbrooke Rev. George Chambers commissioned a set of 24” Plaster Nativity figures for Carbrooke Church, the figures were dressed in the style of 1920’s and very unusual, sadly over the years the figures have become more and more damaged, until it has not been possible to put them out recently, but we are delighted that they are now being renovated, and will be displayed again within the church for Christmas. Please come and have a look at them as they are unique.

‘Father George’ who commissioned the figures had many Socialist principles and the figures were originally displayed in a ‘carpenter shop’ setting which is also being re-created, although I am not sure whether the hammer and scykle will be displayed!

We are extremely grateful to Rene and Brian Smith, Enid Clarke and Chris Jenner, for the renovation of the figures.

Next Meeting will be February 13th 7pm in the School. All welcome.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
