We have not had a meeting since our
last report.
Carbrooke is not that big, but how
well do you know the different areas, and do you often visit the different
parts of the village. Perhaps we can focus on an area, every now and then, I
have started with Caudle Springs, as that is the part of the village I live.
Caudle/Caudell/Cordle Springs (probably
meaning cold well springs) as there were many springs in the area, and it is
still quite boggy in places, is a hamlet between Carbrooke and Watton on the Drury
Lane/ Watton Green Road, it appeared to lose its identity as it became an
extension of Drury Lane, in the latter part of 20th century, but has
now been recognized, by the issue of an official place sign! It is recognised
in its own right in the Carbrooke census’ and church records.
Caudle Springs lies on the very
western border of the parish with Watton and Ovington. The ancient and now
demolished church of Carbrooke Parva was located in the field on the corner of
the Watton Road/Ovington Road, west side. Perhaps Caudle Springs was originally
the village of Carbrooke Parva. There are a couple of farm houses and, what
were farm cottages, although now they are privately owned, and one or two newer
houses. White Hall, may well have been one of the original Manors of Carbrooke.
Caudle Green Farm (belonging to Carbrooke Hall Estate) is also very old. There
is a footpath leading to the Norwich Road, for anyone wanting a short cut, most
of the land is cultivated farmland, although Norfolk Naturalist Trust, own an
amount of land running down to the stream, attracting plenty of wildlife.
If anyone else would like to do a
focus on their own part of the Parish, please pass it on to us.
All welcome
to our informal meetings, contact us for details of the next.
