We had a lovely morning chatting with Kathleen Fargey and her mother Mary from America. They were on a 3 week visit to the UK from America , as they research their ancestry and visit historical places of interest. Kathleen claims descent from Matilda of Clare who founded the Church at Carbrooke. Helen Riley gave us background to Matilda and the Knights of St John. Over tea and cake we chatted generally and they were also very interested to hear of the Carbrooke connections the school had with American Servicemen during the war. Kathleen’s father was based at Lakenheath when she was a child, although at that stage, she wasn’t aware of the Norfolk connection, her stay in England, began her interest in history.
We look
forward to approaching residents for the ‘Living
History’ project, to enquire if you are willing to take part, and ask if we
could take a photo of your house, and whether you have any further interesting
information of its history. (we have many different house styles in Carbrooke as
a broad representation of British building styles over the centuries, so a
selection of all house styles will be very interesting – (not just the old ones)!
We also hope residents on the Norwich Road Estates will be keen to take part
too. The properties will be plotted onto a map to create a ‘history’ of our
community as it is now. The information will be compiled into a book later in
the year.
We have been
approached by a lady from America, who claims descent from Matilda of Clare
(the founder of Carbrooke Church). She would like to visit Carbrooke and find
out more of its history. If anyone would like to join us in greeting her on 11th
May in Carbrooke Church, please contact me for more details. Following this, on
20th July, Helen Riley will
be presenting her talk on ‘Carbrooke and the Knights Hospitallers’ for the
Trefoil Society. Anyone else is welcome to attend in the Church at 2pm. It is a
fascinating talk, if you have never had the opportunity to attend before.
On Friday 17th
June, 7.30pm. Tom Thurston will be presenting a talk
‘The History of
the Heavy Horse’, in the Village Hall.
All welcome.
Bar & Raffle

Our next
meeting will be held on Monday 9th May, 7pm In Carbrooke Church.
All welcome
to our informal meetings.
