Carbrooke Heritage Group News January 2014

Our next meeting is planned for early February, when we will be discussing how we will be commemorating the centenary anniversary of the start of the First World War. In particular how it affected those who took part, their families, and Carbrooke in general.

Hanging in the Church is a memorial to all those from Carbrooke who took part, although not completed until 1929, discussions had been taking place during this time at the Church Council meetings, to produce a list of names of the men, and how a suitable memorial could be produced, by which time families may have moved on, the Vicar had changed, and it could well have become more difficult for those who created it, to remember all who took part. It is interesting to discover that many of those commemorated, were born in Carbrooke but had moved on and were not living here at the start of the war (one appears to have been living in Canada). Or, were not native to Carbrooke but living here at the start of the war.

It was obviously extremely important to the village to remember those who had sacrificed their lives to the war. Although the majority of the men on the list were not killed, no doubt they all suffered either physically or mentally from the horrendous events they witnessed.

If anybody would like to get involved in this project please contact us, or perhaps you have some details, photos or documents that would be relevant.

Everyone is welcome to attend our informal meetings, where we usually end up chatting about our Carbrooke memories, if anybody has a particular project they would like to get involved in, we would love to hear from you .
