On 17th November in the Village Hall Robert Chalmers, (ex solicitor and Carbrooke residemt), very kindly agreed to present a talk on the history of land and home ownership beginning from earliest times, also referencing legal jargon that can be found in old (and present documents), the talk was very interesting and well supported, with raffle and donations, we were able to give around £50 to the Millenium Green committee.
It is surprising how contact can be
made using the internet, The Heritage Group received contact from a town in
Canada, whichrecently unveiled a new Memorial
to their men who died during the battle of Vimy Ridge (WW1). On it, is included
Dennis Ainger’s name – born in Carbrooke & who emigrated to Canada before
WW1. He is also commemorated on Carbrooke War Memorial. (see also unveiling of
King David Painting restoration in the church news).
You may be aware of the Village Armour
(rediscovered during Carbrooke Festival), this has been sent to an expert in
London for evaluation. Only fragments of it remain and in poor condition.
Originally we believed this to be the Carbrooke Knights’ Armour, but is now
thought to be from the Civil War, when each village was expected to provide an
armoured soldier in event of war. This may be even more significant to the
village history, as there are very few remnants of ‘Village Standing Army’
Armour left in the country.
We are still working on the Village
Interpretation Boards. 2 copies are planned
– 1 for village hall carpark and one for area near Blenheim Grange. Adrian
Talbot has sent his first ideas of design.- which will be similar to the one in
the churchyard.
Derek Watts commented that Fuel
Charity had a 15 acre field on Broadmoor Road and 2.5 acre field near Minns
land, the proceeds of which is used to fund Fuel Charity (ie providing fuel/
expenses, to the poor of the village – in the past the fuel would have been
stored in the cottage (end on) to Bridge St.
The small cottage opposite White Hall
(Caudle Springs has been demolished – perhaps there used to be a WW2 gun
placement there – due to an unusual brick structure left still.
Wayland Heritage Group are applying
for a Lottery Grant to research the effects of WW2 on the Wayland area, - to be put into a book as for WW1 – as there
are a number of ‘anniversaries’ in the next few years. We decided it would be
good to be involved, as Carbrooke has quite a wealth of very interesting
information from this time.
We still do not have a Chairman for
the group, if anyone is interested please get in touch. Roger Weston is willing
to collate the information we have for the ‘Moment In Time’ project.
The Heritage Group supported the idea
that the bus shelter should not be removed, as it is a part of Carbrooke
Heritage. Also that perhaps a fitting memorial to Robert Buscall who has
recently died, could be placed in the village, Robert was our village ‘Squire’
and benefactor to the village (often behind the scenes),
Next Meeting:
Thursday 18th January 7pm in the Village Hall.
