Carbrooke Heritage News; May 2018

I have been rather quiet regarding Carbrooke Heritage News lately, but there is still lots going on, Our Facebook page is continuing to attract comments and interest from both local people and those further afield.

We have had 2 meetings this year, one in January and one in March, and are continuing with our ongoing projects as well as planning activities for the year.

We are still working towards the Moment in Time project: in which we are taking photos and brief histories of the houses and buildings in Carbrooke with owner’s permission, to be put onto DVD  & to produce a hard copy to be sold, as a record of Carbrooke now. If anyone has not been approached and would like to be involved, please contact us, or take a picture of your own house with brief history (however old or new), and send it to us. We are particularly short of examples from the Norwich Road Estates

The Village Information boards are still in process, we hope to produce 3 which will be placed at different areas of the Parish, as a map and pictorial heritage of the area.

Wayland Partnership are beginning a Project to investigate effects of WW2 on this area (as they did for WW1), and have asked if we would like to be involved. There are lots of records related to WW2 in Carbrooke, for example very detailed school log books, and we would like to be involved with this project. You may have noticed the Commonwealth Grave Commission notice attached to the church railings to pointing to the War Memorial.

We have organised a further Trip to West Tofts following on from the success of last years, we already had a waiting list, and this trip is now full. – 5th July 2018.

You may recall that we rediscovered parts of the ‘Carbrooke Armour’, which were feared lost. The pieces were sent to the Norwich Museums Trust and also to the Queens Armourer at the Historic Royal Palaces, who say the armour isn’t medieval, but infact from the civil war, and part of the ‘village armour’, and is very rare. We have been given a quote to restore it, and would also require a special case to display/keep it safe. A great piece of Carbrooke Heritage with national significance!
