The Heritage
display at the Patronal Festival at the end of June was an enjoyable event. We
has visits from a number of Carbrooke residents and ex- residents, with
interesting stories to tell, if you came along I hope you found out some
interesting facts about the village.
Various
old photos were on display, particularly from school days which caused some hilarity and reminiscences. Some of these have been posted on our Facebook page, for those unable to attend the event, and it has certainly got memories and chat going.
There is often
bad publicity around Facebook. But as we become more aware of Dementia and
Alzheimers disease, perhaps repositories like these can help to stimulate happy
memories, and get people chatting with each other. I may have to take a leaf
out of my own book too, as I have already written a report for this issue of
NPN , but cannot find it anywhere!
We also
discovered some very early issues of the Penny News (issue 2, 3 and 5) which
can also be found on the our website. We took the opportunity to transcribe
(copy), Carbrooke Burial records , as we had the actual Registers on display
1813 -68.
Enid told us
of her memories of Holidays to Eccles on Sea, organised for the Carbrooke
children by ‘Father George’ and his wife. A trip to the seaside would have been
quite an event in those days, but the children were taken for a week’s camp.
(Doreen nee Harvey) who also attended the Festival told us of her memories of
the camp…she put her foot in a sea pool, and had her toe bitten by a crab!
All welcome
to our informal meetings, the next will be Thursday September at 7pm in the church.
