Lovely sunny day today, and at this time of year I can’t help but notice all the seasonal smells there are, particularly plants. Wallflowers and wild currant, remind me of my RAF childhood, as most RAF gardens seemed to have the same plants – including lavender, mint, paeonies and privet hedges. I wonder if any of the ex RAF houses in Carbrooke still have any of these original plants in their gardens.
Perhaps
certain cooking smells remind you of home. The public buildings in our village
have their own smells too - the school, the church or the village hall, and if
we were blindfolded and taken into one of them, I expect we could tell which,
by the smell. In the winter I love the smell of wood smoke on an open fire, but
just as much I like the smell of a coal fire – and there is a difference.
Perfume,
aftershave or a certain soap soap, may remind us of certain friends or family.
There are so
many smells around us all the time, which we don’t usually notice, but when we
catch a waft of them later, or in an unexpected place, they can bring back
memories.
The Heritage
Group will be putting on a display in the church during the Patronal Festival
27th & 28th June, to cover all aspects of Carbrooke
life: - family, social, agricultural, educational and religious. If anyone has
any items they would like to share, copy, lend, or donate, please let us know.
We hope to have a number of parish Registers on display from the Norfolk
Archives. The 1611 Carbrooke Bible will also be on display in the church. Come
along for a chat or to share your reminiscences.
All welcome
to our informal meetings, contact us for details of the next.
