Carbrooke Heritage News: November 2015

The Wayland Heritage Display ‘Impact’ of WW1 on the Wayland area. It was an amazing event when the Heritage groups of the Wayland villages got together, to display their WW1 research findings. Such a lot of work went into the event, and hopefully it will encourage other people to share information they may have as the research continues.

As we look forward to Christmas, at this very traditional time,  we remember back to the excitement of our Christmases as children, the excitement of waiting to unwrap long awaited gifts, to eat food only available (or affordable) at this time of year, and to get together with friends and family for parties.

I wonder whether today’s children will look back on their Christmases, with the same nostalgia. These days, it seems ‘special’ gifts are expected and afforded the year round, ‘stocking fillers’ are bought without a second thought and soon discarded, the ‘magic’ of Christmas broken, by advertising and availability long before the event. Christmas television shows can be seen any time of year, with the increase of channels and the internet and all food is available year round!

As I get older, perhaps I am continuing with tradition and reiterating my parents and grandparents views, that things were better and simpler in their own times, and as life continues, I hope the children of today and grandchildren of tomorrow, will look back with nostalgia on their own childhood Christmases and do the same!!

Our next Heritage meeting: Tuesday 1st December 7pm at Brakehill Lodge Shipdham Road. All welcome to our informal meetings.
