THOMAS & ROBERT FEVERALL – KING DAVID PAINTING

Recently an art expert has had a look at one of the paintings hanging in Carbrooke Church.

The massive picture hangs at the back of the church by the organ, and is said to represent King David. Sadly it is a rather dark and dingy painting, however the expert commented, that although it isn’t of great value, it is a significant painting, and particularly to Carbrooke (further research required).

If the painting was restored, it would be shown to have been painted in beautiful colours, and could originally have been hung in the Chancel (choir). Sadly at present we do not have the funds to restore it, but discovering its provenance and history would be interesting.

The painting is dated 1747.  Apparently there are also paintings by the same artist in Chichester Cathedral and it would be interesting to find the connection.

The art expert also pointed out there is likely to be a connection between this painting, and Thomas Feverall, a London Merchant and his sons Thomas and Robert who have tombs in the chancel of Carbrooke Church, in a very dominant position.

Feverall, is not as far as we know a Carbrooke or even local name, so it would be interesting to discover more about him, and how he came to be buried in Carbrooke Church.

It appears that Thomas Feverall was living around the time the painting was painted.

If anyone is interested in carrying out further research, we would be very interested to hear more, this would be an opportunity for anyone, who would like to take part in Carbrooke research but is unable to join us in our meetings due to distance. Hopefully there are online resources for Thomas Feverall too.

There are various references for items held at Norfolk Record Office which may be of interested. There are in fact many other items there relating to Carbrooke, which may also hold clues.

At our last meeting we made suggestions as to talks and events we may hold in the future, so keep your diaries open for dates to learn more of the very interesting and varied history of our area.

Our next Heritage meeting: Wednesday 9th March 7pm at Brakehill Lodge Shipdham Road. All welcome to our informal meetings.
