On 26th
September Helen Riley gave a fascinating talk on ‘Carbrooke and the Knights
Hospitallers’, Carbrooke in medieval time was a village of wealth and reknown,
it housed the ‘Commanderie of the Knights of St John’ a number of whom fought in the crusades. The
modern day Knights Hospitallers are the St John Ambulance organisation, and
their Norfolk Headquarters in Norwich is known as ‘Carbrooke House’.
2nd
October we met at the Caudle Springs footpath to log interesting features,
trees and plants on the Caudle Springs to Aerolite footpath. It became obvious that this had
previously been a wide track probably suitable for vehicles, we also found a
number of very large oak trees, and are interested to find out more about the
‘Pill Box’ – why was it positioned on this footpath, and why in the centre of
the path.
To be
followed up at our next meeting in the Village Hall, when we will be studying
old maps of the area, in particular noting our footpaths. 29th October 7pm, in Carbrooke Village Hall. All
welcome
Next
year will begin 4 years of national commemoration of the First World War. We
will be marking this, by embarking on a project to discover more of all the
Carbrooke men who took part, not just those who died. There is a list of thanks
dedicated to all of them, in the Church. If anybody would like to get involved
or has information/is a descendant or relative, please contact us.
All
welcome to any of our group meetings.
